This complete study guide will walk you through everything you need to know to pass TOPIK Level 1 and Level 2. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have been studying Korean for a while, this guide will help you prepare with confidence and save lots of time and nerves.
My name is Anna, and I’ve been teaching Korean for over 14 years. I’ve helped hundreds of students pass TOPIK, and I reached TOPIK Level 6 myself. After years of trial and error I now know what works and what doesn’t. Let me share everything I’ve learned with you.
What is TOPIK 1?
TOPIK stands for Test of Proficiency in Korean. TOPIK 1 is for beginner - level 1 and level 2 of Korean proficiency. It checks if you can handle basic daily conversations and simple tasks in Korean.
What can you expect to see in TOPIK 1?
- Reading section (40 questions)
- Listening section (30 questions)
- Total time: 100 minutes
- Total score: 200 points
In order to pass TOPIK level 1 you need at least 80 points, and at least 140 points to pass level 2.
Is TOPIK 1 Worth It?
A lot of people wonder if TOPIK 1 is worth it. And the answer is yes! Here’s why so many people take it:
- It proves your Korean skills (As does TOPIK 2) - Having a TOPIK certificate shows you’re serious about learning Korean
- It helps with applying for jobs – In order to get a job in Korea you need to speak at least a little Korean, and some companies may require TOPIK scores.
- It tracks your progress – You can see your progress so far by taking the test. It provides a helpful guidance for planning your Korean language study direction.
- It builds confidence – Once you pass at least level 1, you’ll be more open and excited to speak Korean.
