Hi Anna, I'm super excited to start learning Korean (Hangul?)! A quick question on the TOPIK test. Is it realistic to say that if I start now, I will be ready to take the TOPIK I and II test in October? Do you have to take the test in 2026 or can you take the test in 2027? I'm living in South Africa.

@AltaBranco Hi Alta! So glad you are joining us in the beginner course! To give you a realistic picture: based on overall data from our students (and me taking these exams religiously for the past 15+ years), it is totally possible to reach TOPIK I Level 1, or even Level 2. Because you are starting as a complete beginner, it will require structure, discipline, and daily study. For reference, about 3 months of consistent (daily) study roughly equals 1 level. Keep in mind that TOPIK I and TOPIK II are entirely separate exams, so for October, you should focus exclusively on TOPIK I. Because the test has its own unique caveats, you'll want to add dedicated exam prep to your schedule alongside your regular lessons. Fortunately, TOPIK I has a limited vocabulary and grammar list, which you will start noticing this once you practice with previous mock papers. Regarding when to take it: while you can technically take the exam as many times as you want, the schedule depends heavily on your location. As far as I know in most countries, including South Africa (please double check this with your local TOPIK spots), the Paper-Based TOPIK is typically hosted at the Korean Cultural Centre only once a year, usually in April. If there does happen to be a registration window open for an October test session locally, I highly recommend signing up and taking it anyway, regardless of whether you feel 100% ready. Treat it purely as a practice run! Korean tests are notorious for focusing heavily on strategy and time management. Sitting in the actual exam room and experiencing the pacing firsthand is incredibly valuable. If October isn't available, then aiming for April 2027 will give you plenty of time to prepare. Let me know if you have more questions. 화이팅!
